Heartworm Prevention and Treatment

Heartworm disease is caused by microscopic larvae that are transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. Left untreated, this disease can make pets very sick, and can even threaten their lives. At Suburban Veterinary Clinic in Maple Heights, OH, we provide heartworm treatment, as well as the preventative medications that can help your pet avoid this serious disease.

Understanding Heartworm Disease

Heartworm larvae are transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. These insects bite infected animals, and the microscopic larvae are released into the bloodstream of the next animal it bites. These larvae migrate through the bloodstream and into the heart and lungs, where they grow and reproduce. As they grow larger and more numerous, they negatively affect the function of the heart and lungs. Infected animals may cough frequently, may tire easily with exercise, or may lose weight. Cats with the disease often vomit, have diarrhea, and show poor condition.

Heartworm Treatment

Your veterinarian can test your pet’s blood for signs of heartworms. In the case of a positive heartworm test, a vet will then begin treatment. Standard treatment for heartworm disease includes the use of medications to eliminate adolescent worms, antibiotics, and steroids to reduce symptoms. Limiting activity during and for a time after treatment is critical for infected animals. Re-testing after a period of time ensures that no heartworms remain in the body. There is no standard treatment for cats, but antibiotics, cortisone, and oxygen therapy can help manage symptoms.

Prevention of Heartworm Disease

Your vet can provide medications that prevent heartworm disease in your pet. The oral form of the drug is administered on a monthly basis. An injectable form is also available that protects pets for up to 6 months. When given on a consistent basis, these drugs are highly effective in preventing heartworm disease in pets. Your Maple Heights vet will be happy to discuss these medications with you and advise you on the best type for your pet.
